The boat builders at Fareast Boats in Shanghai are currently undergoing an unprecedented expansion of their product portfolio. In addition to the long-established range of dinghies and small cruisers, the Chinese are announcing new developments for the coming years, including luxury models, a series of cruising catamarans and a new line of genuine racers for the regatta circuit.

With the Fareast 31R, the shipyard presented the first ultimate carbon fibre racer. The 9.50 metre long boat, its concept and the quality were convincing in the YACHT test (test in YACHT 10/2014). However, the complicated racer also proves to be challenging to sail and requires practised teamwork, which appeals to ambitious regatta sailors but makes the boat less suitable for everyday use.

The Chinese are now presenting a smaller and simpler version for their Racing line. With a more conventional sports boat concept, the Fareast 28R should appeal to a broader demand and therefore also have the potential to become a one-design class.

Unlike its bigger sister, the 28R is no longer made entirely from carbon fibre, but from a glass fibre composite sandwich construction using the vacuum infusion process. The two-saling mast is now made of aluminium and the rig is simpler and easier to handle than the 31R. In return, the 28 will have a lifting keel and an attached rudder, making it easier to trailer. The boat could also be launched via the ramp. The construction by Simonis & Voogd Yacht Design is equipped with a small cabin structure for this purpose. This makes it easier to stow the sails in the ship - good for sailing schools and event centres. However, it will not be possible to live on the Fareast 28R.

The first price announcement from the Chinese appears attractive: the 28R will cost 41,300 euros, including a set of sails (main, jib, gennaker) and 19 per cent VAT. Construction number 1 is due to sail in Shanghai at the end of August. In the meantime, the shipyard is already working with the sales department on the rapid international class construction. Details will soon be available on the website ( www.fareast28r.com ) has been announced.
